Sitting in the passenger’s seat of my mom’s Subaru Outback, with my dog in the back, we were all on our way to a vet appointment when my mom asked to see where it was we were going. Before we set out, my mom clearly had in her mind where the vet office was located. I, holding the phone with the navigation on the screen, was trying to convince her it wasn’t where she thought it was.

The discussion came to a head and my mom out of frustration asked to see the phone. At a red light, I handed the phone over then my mom used her thumb and forefinger to enlarged the map to see the vet’s office. 

“Oh! That’s not where I thought I was headed!?” 

She handed the phone back as the light turned green but she still continued to ask me where to turn. 

Out of frustration I asked her,  “can you just trust that you are on this road until Maps tells you to take a left?!”

Listening to the words come out of my own mouth, I smiled. 

How many times have I questioned God when feeling directed by Him? 

Are you sure God? Are you sure that’s where you want me to go?  

Or

That’s not the destination I thought I was going! 

Or 

I think I need to take a left here! 

And I can picture Him thinking the same exact thing… Can you trust you’re on this path until I tell you to turn?

Much like my mom, I think we all want to know where we are headed. We want to know the route, final destination and the timing that we’ll get there. If we don’t know these answers, we get very anxious, frustrated and maybe question it all. Sometimes I think we get caught up in the need for control or the fearful thinking that we need to figure it out in our own. 

But the anxiety, frustration, questioning and control creates a whole lot of suffering, when all that was needed was to trust and surrender that God will get us to the destination, at the right time, even if it isn’t where we thought we were going. 

Where are you headed? Do you trust God to get you to the destination on time? Remember it’s not your timing but His. 

He wants you to be a faithful driver, obey his directions and enjoy the ride.
